-It is recommended to only use charcoal briquettes when banking coals against the kettle wall. Here is a statement from a Weber Customer Service Representative regarding the matter, “Banking coals along the side of the kettle is acceptable, but you may want to avoid using lump charcoal in that situation due to its propensity to burn a bit hotter and faster than standard briquettes.“
